About CVac™

CVac – a newly developed cancer vaccine
Standard treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy assist many patients and are the mainstay of initial treatment. Unfortunately however, in many cases these measures do not stop or slow down the cancer spreading, with no safe options available to patients after this initial treatment phase.

CVac™ is a newly-developed cancer vaccine specifically for patients in remission, with the aim of extending their lives. In the last decade it has been developed by Prima Biomed and manufactured at the world famous Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia with successful results to date. It has been shown to extend ovarian cancer patients’ lives by on average 18 weeks, with cases of ovarian cancer being stabilised, a breakthrough for ovarian cancer patients in remission.

How does it work
CVac™ is a part of a new class of cancer treatments known collectively as immunotherapy. Other similar treatments include Provenge a treatment for prostate cancer developed by Dendreon in the US. The idea behind these cancer vaccines is to stimulate your immune system to launch an attack on cancer cells in particular and slow down or stop the spread of cancer making you or your loved ones live longer. CVac™in particular uses the power of live human cells to engage the patient‘s own immune system.

CVac™ works using the following components
  1. A patients own dendritic cells primed with a special protein found on many cancer cells known as Mucin-1.
  2. Mannan Fusion Protein which stimulates your immune system.
